This postdoctoral research position is part of the exciting new five-year partnership between the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CommBank) and the Australian Institute for Machine Learning (AIML) at the University of Adelaide. The partnership aims to boost foundational AI research in Australia, focusing on areas such as natural language processing, computer vision, and machine learning.

**The tasks of the postdoctoral researcher (innovation) will include**:

- Develop innovative algorithms, machine learning models, and AI systems that address real-world challenges in banking and finance.
- Collaborate closely with CommBank representatives to understand industry needs and translate research into practical solutions.
- Publish research findings in top-tier conferences and journals in AI, machine learning, and related fields.
- Contribute to the development of prototypes and proof-of-concept systems that demonstrate the potential of AI in financial services.
- Participate in regular meetings and workshops with CommBank to ensure alignment between research goals and industry needs.
- Mentor junior researchers and PhD students working on related projects within the partnership.

- Research publications in high-quality journals and conferences.

**To be successful you will need**:

- A PhD in Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering or other Machine Learning-related field.
- Programming experience in Matlab, Python, C++ or other relevant language and experience in deep neural networks.
- Experience and demonstratable knowledge in deep learning, transformer networks, and implicit neural functions. Strong math skills in matrix calculus, and the foundational aspects of modern deep learning.
- A strong work ethic, and the ability to work well independently, and as a member of a broader team, including with industrial partners
- Fluency in written and spoken English, with an ability to communicate scientific ideas to an expert audience.
- Commitment to the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion.

**Desirable characteristics**:

- Experience in large data sets and their platforms/tools, cloud-based architectures, and deployment frameworks for machine learning algorithms.
- An outstanding publication record in top tier machine learning and/or computer vision conferences or journals, commensurate with experience and opportunity.
