About the role

This is a new role established as part of RMIT’s objective of accelerating translation and enablingimpact creation through innovation and enterprise development.

The Manager, Intellectual Property is responsible, as part of the team, for the day-to-day management of RMIT's patent, design and trademark portfolio.

Working as part of the Intellectual Property and Commercialisation team to accelerate the translation of the university’s innovation, the Manager, Intellectual Property develops and maintains a network among researchers, business partnership and research support managers to identify potential opportunities to create value from RMIT Intellectual Property. In addition, the Manager, Intellectual Property supports the Intellectual Property and Commercialisation team, developing reports, case studies and systems for capturing RMIT's research outcomes in accordance with the RMIT strategy.

The Manager, Intellectual Property, as a member of the broader Research Partnerships and Translation Unit, is responsible for building and maintaining strong internal and external networks, internally with Research Colleges and Schools and Research and Innovation units and externally with industry partners, service providers and other stakeholders in the evolving innovation ecosystem.

The position forms part of a highly collegial and team-based unit and works closely with the Research Partnerships and Major Research Initiatives functions, as well as other key stakeholders in the Research and Innovation Portfolio to support the identification, management and translation of new major research opportunities across RMIT.

The Manager, Intellectual Property also supports the development, implementation and reporting of metrics related to RMIT's Research Translation and Commercialisation strategy and the Intellectual Property plan.

To be successful in this position, you’ll have:
- Experience in managing a patent portfolio and a solid understanding of the patenting process. This includes a good understanding of the relationship between research, practice and policy as it relates to RMIT research areas.- Demonstrated understanding of and ability to identify and assess intellectual property, including prior art searching and analysing the IP landscape.- Demonstrated high-level interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills with proven ability to work as part of a team in a service function, build and maintain strong professional relationships, and work with others to achieve successful outcomes.- Experience in identifying potential market opportunities for technology and contributing to the development of commercialisation plans.- Excellent business writing skills and demonstrated experience facilitating comprehensive recommendations, project and implementation plans, briefing papers and reports.-
- Proven ability to work in a high volume, high demand role, requiring strong problem solving and analytical skills, flexibility and the ability to prioritise, monitor and progress multiple projects and requests for information and assistance simultaneously, and to work under pressure of various deadlines.- Demonstrated history of behaviour aligned to the RMIT values and professional capability framework.

Research Partnerships and Translation

Part of the Research and Innovation Portfolio, the Research Partnerships and Translation Unit supports and enables researchers to partner to achieve excellent research translation outcomes. The Research Partnerships and Translation Unit also oversees intellectual property (IP) capture, protection and translation, new venture creation and funding, and intellectual property commercialisation for the university.
