We are seeking an experienced Economist to join our dynamic Revenue Group in the role of VPS4 Economist. In this position, you will provide quantitative policy advice, conduct economic analysis, and contribute to major government reports and publications. **Economic division**

The Economic Division leads the development of advice to the Government, and implementation of priority projects, for key economic and policy priorities including economic strategy, regulatory reform, housing, social policy, government tax policy and intergovernmental financial relations to drive improvements in Victoria's productive and efficient resource allocation, competitiveness and equity across the economy.

**Revenue Group**

An exciting opportunity exists for an Economist with experience in providing quantitative policy advice in the Tax Policy Teams, Revenue Group.

The Revenue Group is responsible for providing analysis and advice to Government on the following issues:

- Tax policy, including the composition and performance of state taxes and revenue policy options and opportunities to improve the State's tax mix.
- Gambling policy, including advice on economic, tax and legislative issues in relation to lotteries, gaming machines, casino, keno and wagering.
- Intergovernmental financial relations, particularly in relation to the distribution and design of Commonwealth funding to states and territories.
- Revenue forecasting, including projections of Victoria's GST revenue and state own source revenues, including payroll, property, gambling, insurance and motor vehicle taxes.

**About the role**

This is an ongoing VPS4 role reporting to the Manager, Business Taxes and Gambling. As an Economist in the Tax and Gambling Policy team, you will be working in a fast-paced environment and an influential team that covers the full policy cycle including policy development and implementation, modelling the impacts of tax changes, conducting research and advising on legislation.

Key accountabilities include:

- Quantitative analysis of economic, financial and public policy issues of major significance to the Victorian economy and government.
- Undertaking quantitative research and analysis, both as independent discrete work, and in contribution to broader team projects.
- Preparing timely, accurate and authoritative briefings on a wide range of economic and financial policy issues for senior management and government.
- Communicating and consulting in an effective and influential manner with stakeholders.
- Making contributions to major government reports, reviews and publications.

**About you**

To be considered for the role, you must be able to demonstrate:

- Experience in providing quantitative policy advice.
- A record of achievement using economic principles, analytical, research, and quantitative skills, with an understanding quantitative analysis.
- Ability to analyse complex datasets using statistical software such as Stata or R, including the development of modelling to identify issues and to assess the fiscal implications of policy ideas.
- Ability to provide strategic and influential advice to senior management or government on key policy issues in the economy.
- Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to convey complex issues persuasively and effectively. Ability to work collaboratively or on a self-directed basis.
- Ability to identify, build and maintain strong networks and relationships with stakeholders.
