**Fixed term, part-time (0.5FTE) contract until 30 May 2026.**

The School of Biological Sciences in the Faculty of Sciences brings together the internationally acclaimed and contemporary disciplines of molecular & cellular biology; ecology & environmental sciences; and genetics & evolution, delivering undergraduate and postgraduate education, training and research with both national relevance and global outreach and networks in the public and private sectors.

The Research Assistant will be responsible for the processing of DNA from ancient and historic samples obtained from sediments (and potentially bone or other tissue types) collected as part of research projects undertaken within the ARC Centre of Excellence for Indigenous and Environmental Histories and Futures (CIEHF).

The role will be responsible for undertaking laboratory activities associated with the project, ensuring the laboratory is operating according to relevant standard operating procedures and risk assessment and ensuring the laboratory housekeeping is maintained in an appropriate manner conducive to research outputs. The Research Assistant will work closely with the research lead and broader team to drive outputs in the laboratory and communicate outcomes accordingly.

**To be successful you will need**:

- Demonstrated experience working in an ancient DNA laboratory.
- Demonstrated experience with sedimentary ancient DNA extraction and library preparation protocols.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary team and to develop collaborative working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Demonstrated experience working in a research/technical environment to support research activities along with excellent technical writing skills to communicate science to a range of stakeholder.
- Highly developed communication and time management skills with the ability to work independently and as part of a team to achieve outcomes.
- Knowledge of workplace health and safety principles, to ensure the safety of self, colleagues and students, and a demonstrated commitment to Equal Opportunity principals.
- Demonstrated ability to promote the organisational values of integrity, respect, collegiality, excellence and discovery, and a commitment to positively comply with the associated behaviour expectations.
