**About the role**:
An exciting opportunity exists in the Aboriginal Health Unit for a highly motivated Aboriginal Health worker with appropriate knowledge and skills to join our friendly and supportive team. **About you**:
The successful applicant will be expected to be able to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients who are dealing with health-related issues primarily in the acute and sub-acute settings at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney Ltd.
The AHW will also assist staff to provide culturally safe/respectful care to Aboriginal patients and families.
The AHW role carries responsibilities for effective liaison and linkage with key community-controlled organisations, particularly Aboriginal Community groups and services. The position will contribute to the promotion of the Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) for SVHS.
This role requires proven ability and experience in engaging with Aboriginal people and communities in a health care setting and experience in but not limited to Homelessness, Mental Health, Drug and Alcohol, and Domestic Violence. You could also have experience in Child Protection, Trauma, Coronial Process, Sudden Death and/or Chronic Disease management and this would be beneficial in this role.
This role will also involve shift rotation that includes afternoon shift.

2. Be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent; identify as an Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander; be accepted as an Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander in the community in which he/she/they lives or has lived. This is a genuine occupational qualification as described under Section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW)
3. Demonstrated understanding of Aboriginal culture and the issues affecting Aboriginal people including their primary health and welfare needs and experience in providing support and advocacy for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Including the ability to work as a member of a multidisciplinary team
4. Proven ability and experience in engaging with Aboriginal people and communities in a health care setting and experience in but not limited to Homelessness, Mental Health, Drug and Alcohol, and Domestic Violence
5. Well-developed written and verbal communication skills - including advocacy, liaison (internal and external), project management and negotiation.
