**Role purpose**
The Head of Collection Data and Digitisation is responsible for leading the strategic direction and operational management of the business unit.
The Head of Collection Data and Digitisation oversees a multidisciplinary team, driving initiatives in digital preservation, digitisation, intellectual property management and the development of collection information systems and processes.
The role is pivotal in advancing the Museum’s goal of leveraging cutting-edge technologies to enhance the visibility and impact of the Museum’s collection and ensuring the long-term preservation of collection information and digital assets.
Through creative collaboration with key business units, the Head of Collection Data and Digitisation also plays a key role in enabling the Museum’s digital collection holdings to be dynamically presented, supporting lifelong engagement and contribution to the Museum’s standing as a leader in cultural preservation and education.
**Key accountabilities**
- **Strategic leadership**: Provide strategic leadership to the Collection Data and Digitisation unit in alignment with the objectives of the Collection and Curatorial Division and the Museum’s mission. Develop and implement strategies to enhance the accessibility and preservation of the Museum’s collection information and assets.
- **Team leadership**: Lead, develop and mentor a multidisciplinary team, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, service delivery and excellence. Ensure that team members have the necessary skills, resources and support to achieve their objectives and contribute to the Museum’s mission.
- **Collection management systems**: Oversee the development and innovative management of the Museum’s collection information systems (Collection Management System, Digital Asset Management System, Trusted Digital Repository).
- **Data governance**: Ensure the integrity of the Museums’ collection records and assets through the development and maintenance of rigorous collection data governance, models, processes and standards, including the development of culturally appropriate, collaborative and responsive models of working with First Nations data and collections.
- **Digital preservation**: Oversee the development and execution of digital preservation strategies, ensuring that the Museum’s collections are securely stored and accessible to future generations. Drive innovation in the use of digital technologies and the Museum’s collection management systems to enhance the management and dissemination of collection assets.
- **Digitisation**:Oversee a program of creative and innovative collection capture, including techniques such as photography, 3D and 2D scanning, photogrammetry, audio and visual recording. This includes the management of both internal and outsourced digitisation programs.
- **IP rights**: Oversee the management of intellectual property rights and permissions related to the Museum’s collections. Ensure compliance with legal and ethical standards, and develop strategies to manage copyright, access and usage rights in a way that maximises public engagement while protecting the Museum’s interests.
- **Access initiatives**:Collaborate with key business units (such as Curatorial, Education and Creative Content) to develop and implement strategies and deliver projects that enhance the visibility and impact of the Museum’s collections.
- **Compliance and integrity**:Ensure compliance with all relevant legal, ethical and safety standards, and oversee the implementation of risk management practices to protect the integrity and security of the Museum’s collection data and digital assets.
- **Project management**: Lead and manage projects within the Collection Data and Digitisation unit, ensuring they are delivered on time, within budget and to a high standard. Implement best practices in project management to drive efficiency, quality, and continuous improvements across the unit.
- **Reporting and continuous improvement**: Monitor and report on the performance of the Collection Data and Digitisation unit, providing regular updates to senior Management. Use data and evidence-based analysis to inform decision making and continuously improve the effectiveness of the unit.
**Skills, experience and qualifications**
Essential:
- Extensive expertise in collection management, digital preservation and intellectual property rights (10+ years), with a deep understanding of industry standards, best practices and emerging trends in digital collection stewardship.
- Proven experience leading and managing multidisciplinary teams, with a strong track record of driving innovation, collaboration and excellence in collection management and digital preservation.
- Demonstrated expertise in managing collection information and data management systems, such as digital asset management systems, trusted digital repositories and collection management systems.
