ASIS is Australia's overseas secret intelligence collection agency. Its mission is to protect and
promote Australia's vital interests through the provision of intelligence services as directed by the
Government. Its work can involve collecting intelligence relating to national security, international
relations and economic issues. It also contributes to Australia's coordinated national efforts
against terrorism, proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and trans-national issues such as
people smuggling.

ROLE
As the Director of Personnel Security, you will be responsible for leading and managing the
personnel security function within ASIS. To undertake this role, you will have an advanced
knowledge of Australian Government security policies and practices, and an understanding of
contemporary personnel security issues, including insider threat management. You will be
responsible for leading significant change within ASIS’s personnel security function.
In addition, you will contribute to further enhancing the overall effectiveness and efficiency of
ASIS’s security practices and culture. You will also build and sustain effective relationships across
government, as well as across ASIS’s operational and corporate divisions, and with international
partners.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS
Outlined below are the key areas of responsibility for the position:
Leadership and oversight of all facets of ASIS’s personnel security policies and practices,
including capability building and strategic forecasting;
Leadership and management of the personnel security team, including re-evaluation,
clearance maintenance and insider threat functions;
- Including prioritisation, coordinating human and financial resources, and
identifying and implementing efficiencies;
Maintain personnel security policies, leading change and monitoring compliance in a risk
managed environment;
Lead the response to personnel security issues as they arise, including the provision of
advice and investigations;
Oversee the more sensitive or complex vetting and re-evaluation cases and provide quality
assurance;
Enhance organisational security culture; and
Represent the Service across government and internationally, as appropriate.
EDUCATION / QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE
The following education, qualifications and/or experience will be highly regarded:
Demonstrated experience in the senior-level management of security policy and
operations within a risk-management environment in the Australian Government;
Superior knowledge and understanding of current Australian Government security
arrangements, including the Australian Protective Security Policy Framework;
Demonstrated, current knowledge of personnel security policies and practices; and,
Demonstrated ability to develop and implement proactive and effective security
policies across an organisation;
Demonstrated ability to address highly sensitive security issues effectively and with the
highest levels of discretion;
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing - including effectiveness in
negotiation, consultation and representation both internally and externally;
Certificate IV in Personnel Security (Vetting) or Diploma in Personnel Security (Vetting);
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of National Security matters. foreign
intelligence threats and counter-intelligence; and
Demonstrated experience in personnel security within the Positive Vetting
environment.
