Greater Adelaide SA, Australia Australian Government - Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water Full time

EL 1 - $120,290 - $129,379 per annum plus superannuation
- National Energy Transformation Division
- Adelaide, SA,Brisbane, QLD,Canberra, ACT,Darwin, NT,Hobart, TAS,Melbourne, VIC,Perth, WA,Sydney, NSW

**Who we are**

The National Energy Transformation Division plays an enabling role in the clean energy transition by providing strategic policy advice on the steps needed to transition the electricity and energy sector to net zero emissions by 2050. We partner with the states and territories on the delivery of reforms and provide advice on economic, and energy market trends in the transition to net zero. We work to ensure all consumers and communities benefit equitably from the transition and to support the development of a future energy workforce. We support the department's engagement with energy market bodies, key industry stakeholders and advocates, Snowy Hydro Ltd and the Australian Energy Infrastructure Commissioner.

The Energy System Reform Branch is driving reform in planning and governance of energy systems, including through ensuring that markets work for consumers and support electrification. We work across Government and closely with states, territories, market bodies and industry to transform our systems to reflect the increasingly integrated approach required for Australia’s energy markets to deliver on our climate goals. Our Branch values include being Collaborative, Inclusive and Innovative. We have an excellent Branch culture and are inclusive of staff working across Australia. We build our culture through Branch meetings, regular policy discussions on interesting topics and our leadership’s ‘open-door’ policy.

The Branch includes the following teams:
Strategic Energy Policy
- Supports the delivery of key strategic priorities across Energy Group, including coordination of the Group’s input to Budget processes and key Government briefing processes. The team also acts as secretariat to the Energy Executive Committee.

Energy Consumer Policy
- Works to get Australia’s energy markets working better for households and small businesses. Focusses on consumer protections, equity, and structural reforms for better consumer outcomes.

Regional and Cross-sectoral Demand Transition
- Improving energy system planning, policy and programs through a more granular and integrated understanding of changing energy demand in key industrial regions and across the economy.

Electrification
- Works to deliver a clear, coherent pathway to support electrification as a key decarbonisation lever and to help policies and projects align with this framework. This includes providing an interface between supply and demand side efforts.

**The Job**

Assistant Directors work under broad direction and perform a leadership role. They exercise sound decision making and judgement to produce high level policy advice and outcomes. We are seeking team players who are motivated to contribute to a 'one team' approach to the Branch's work.

Key responsibilities include:

- Policy analysis:

- Conduct research and analysis on current energy policies, trends, and best practice.
- Critically analyse issues and provide insights and recommendations.
- Project management and coordination:

- Coordinate and manage priority activities, including Budget processes, ensuring timelines and deliverables are met.
- Draft policy briefs, Cabinet submissions, reports, and presentations, and summarise and present findings and policy implications, including to senior audiences.
- Facilitate and participate in meetings with stakeholders including other government officials (internal and external), senior executive and ministers’ offices.
- Supervise and mentor more junior staff members as part of a high performing team.

**What we are looking for**
- Proven ability to deliver quality outcomes in a dynamic environment.
- Demonstrated experience working in a policy role, including preparing policy advice and briefing material, or capability to quickly acquire relevant skills.
- An ability to develop, maintain and leverage productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Well-developed communication skills including the ability to negotiate outcomes and deliver high quality written advice on complex and sensitive issues to diverse audiences.
- The ability to exercise judgement, operate independently and manage competing and changing work priorities.
- Adaptability, including the ability to manage day-to-day work changes and shifting priorities effectively.
- The ability to lead and mentor more junior staff members as part of a high performing and inclusive team.

**Desirable qualifications**
