**The Role**
Exciting opportunities exist for Data Officers to join Data Division at the APS 6 level
Data Scientist:
- Undertake research and analysis, conduct investigations and perform data generation and analysis work to achieve results.
- Understand and utilise analytical tools including Artificial Intelligence, machine learning and predictive analytics to prioritise and solve complex problems and test models and simulations to achieve business outcomes.
- Responsible for contributing to the management of the risks associated with the use of data including balancing security and privacy against the benefits of collecting and sharing data.
Data Analyst:
- Identify and undertake analysis to define, structure, solve and provide advice on complex data problems, including gathering and exploring data and meta-data from a variety of sources.
- Understand and utilise analytical tools and techniques to define, structure and solve complex problems.
- Develop and test user interfaces/experiences to achieve business outcomes.
- Prepare, publish, and provide advice on complex databased briefs, reports and advanced visualisations to inform Defence decision making.
Data Engineer:
- Understand utilise and build tools and techniques to develop and test data engineering solutions to achieve business outcomes.
- Prepare, publish and provide advice on requirements, current and future state models and plans, designs and solutions to improve data interoperability, storage, analysis and transmission.
- Build maintain and deploy data pipelines analytical environments and models and data stores to store transform, integrate, analyse and transport data and metadata from a variety of sources to enable others to use and analyse data.
Data Officer:
- Gather, manage and administer data and meta-data from a variety of sources and ensure data quality and validity.
- Understand and utilise analytical tools and techniques to enter, cleanse, administer, monitor, manage, backup, archive and/or destroy data to achieve business outcomes.
- Prepare, publish and provide advice on data policy, business and data quality rules to enable analysis of data.

Data Division is in an exciting phase of growth, innovation and transformation and is the hub of a federated approach to uplift Defence’s ability to generate insights from data and make better-informed decisions. Our goal is to lead by example and support groups and services across Defence to better govern, trust, discover, use and share their data. Data Division is a fully integrated civilian-military-contracted workforce with a variety of specialised skills. We work with a range of stakeholders in and outside of Defence including Industry, Academia, whole-of-government, and international partners. Our leaders are active contributors to our teams. Data Division is based primarily in Canberra, but our team is distributed throughout Australia. Travel may be required for some positions. Where appropriate, Data Division will support flexible working arrangements. However, some of our work is security classified and needs to be conducted in a Defence office with appropriate facilities. Most of the work is computer based and involves collaborating with other people. There will be times of high intensity and tight deadlines, as well as times for deep thinking and learning.

Our workforce and our stakeholders are dispersed throughout Australia, so we are seeking people who are able to build rapport with others without the need for face-to-face contact. Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance at “Negative Vetting Level 1”, but do not need to have a current security clearance to apply.
