The Wardliparingga Aboriginal Health Equity Theme (AHE) at SAHMRI is a leading national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led unit dedicated to wellbeing and achieving health equity among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia through quality and safe health and medical research. This role is required to collaborate with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living on the lands of all traditional custodians across South Australia, Australia and potentially globally.

We are seeking a motivated Research Officer to join Wardliparingga, providing research support to the implementation of projects which focus on racism and its association with chronic disease. In this position, you will facilitate and support community engagement with Aboriginal Community Controlled mainstream organisations and implementation of high-quality mixed methods research with the goal of improving health and social outcomes for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population.

About the role

Key responsibilities include:

- The development and maintenance of relationships with external partners, which are critical to the successful development, implementation, and translation of research.
- Engaging collaboratively with the research team and other stakeholders including governance groups and community members.
- Working to Aboriginal community protocols of engagement and building relationships and advising the program lead and research team so they are embedded within our ways of doing research.
- Assisting the program lead and research team with administrative tasks including scheduling meetings and note-taking.
- Supporting qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis.
- Engaging collaboratively with the research team and other stakeholders including governance groups and community members.
- Supporting research dissemination through assisting with the writing and publishing of papers, conference presentations and community reports.
- Assisting with other research or administration tasks as required.
- Any other responsibilities in line with the level of the position as assigned by the Aboriginal Health Equity Co-Theme leaders
- Maintain high levels of confidentiality in accordance with the privacy act and government regulations.
- Ensure research activities and other outputs are compliant and aligned with the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research and working to the principles of the South Australian Aboriginal Health Research Accord
- Australian Vice-Chancellors’ committee (AVCC) guidelines and principles of research conduct with vulnerable or disadvantaged groups.
- Support the mentorship, training, professional development and/or supervision of trainees, undergraduate, post graduate research students, peers and senior program leads as applicable.

About You
- An undergraduate degree in Health and Medical Sciences, Public Health, psychology or a health-related discipline; or other Certificate-level qualifications in a relevant health discipline.
- Lived experience of Aboriginal community protocols
- Knowledge of and experience working with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population in South Australia
- Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team in a co-operative and collegial manner.
- Ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships across a broad range of industry and research professionals.
- High-level verbal and written communication skills with the ability to present information effectively and clearly to a wide audience.
- Experience in, or a strong interest in, research, including participant recruitment, data collection, analysis reporting, qualitative research, survey development, quantitative data collection and analysis, implementation research and systematic reviews.
- Demonstrated high level organisational skills to manage competing demands and meet project timelines together with sound problem-solving skills.
