**Job Purpose**
- The role of Head of Engineering - Transport is to manage, plan, coordinate and control all engineering and design activities for UGL Transport rolling stock manufacture, remanufacture and refurbishment from feasibility stage to completion and handover to client, ensuring the quality, cost, safety, performance and time schedules are met or exceeded.
This position is to develop and implement business strategies for the Product Design unit that continue to create a culture of engineering excellence, continual technological advancement and position UGL to be regarded by customers, potential clients and competitors alike as “Best in Class”.
This role is to provide effective support and advice to UGL executive management and their teams that will consistently deliver sustainable and responsible returns, revenue and growth, mutually beneficial relationships with customers, suppliers and technology partners, and achieve a business culture which is focused on safe high performance and continuous improvement while meeting all agreed customer requirements.
- This incumbent is to work with all related UGL business areas to ensure coordination, planning, benchmarking, development and deployment of operations-wide, best practice designs, project management and control processes to ensure all works and projects are effectively and efficiently executed and managed profitably in compliance to agreed contractual and commercial requirements.

**Responsibilities**
- Develop strategies, plans, structures, systems, policies, and procedures for innovative, cost effective and efficient Product Design operations.
- Direct, lead, control and coordinate all the functional business activities of Product Design operations to achieve optimum business performance and excellent customer satisfaction.
- Setting the direction for the design/ engineering development; guiding, mentoring, and directing continuous improvement efforts from the beginning of the product cycle through production to in-service developments ensuring design for quality throughout the entire process.
- Create a clear “Vision/Mission” for engineering/product design which is clearly understood and accepted within the business.
- Work with senior executives to establish an organisational structure for the engineering/product design team that best meets the short term & long term needs of an ever changing business.
- Lead major transformation initiatives and re-engineer processes and associated workflows across the product design function to create a robust governance framework for a world class engineering design business.
- Identify, investigate and explore technological developments which can take the business into new market segments and/or to strengthen our position in terms of market penetration or profitability in our existing market.
- Accurately estimate the time, feasibility, complexity and cost to complete projects ensuring that safety, quality, and profit business goals of UGL are meet and competitive to market.
- Provide engineering & design consultancy including troubleshooting and solutions design ideas to the UGL Transport business, ensuring our products/solutions met and where possible exceed customer expectations.
- Manage and continually review all financial budgets examining innovative opportunities to reduce operational costs, reclaim development cost and maximise profits.
- Maximise and continually review all resources (human, plant, equipment and materials) to ensure a timely, cost effective operation, achievement of company objectives and client satisfaction.
- Develop and implement comprehensive measures for reporting the value and contribution the Product Design function is able to make to the business.
- Manage the business interfacing with Operations, Corporate Office, Commercial & Market Management, Project Teams etc ensuring positive, mutually beneficial relationships.
- Manage all operational legal compliance requirements and ensure ethical dealings with all external and internal parties.
- Participate in and initiate projects for: the improvements of engineering processes, systems, new production/ manufacturing methods, implementation of new technology etc both within the Engineering Products Business Unit, UGL Rail and Corporate Office.
