**The Role**
A Precision Machinist / Optics Fabrication Apprentice is accountable under close direction to undertake basic tasks and training activities in their chosen field. They will work within a framework of legislation, established principles, work practices and procedures in accordance with Defence’s mission and business objectives. They will be limited to a range of basic tasks, will contribute to team discussions to achieve outcomes and will seek assistance when required.
They will work towards completing a Trade Certificate and/ or Diploma, including completing all required coursework and adhering to the Apprentice Training Plan. They will be expected to contribute towards ongoing self-improvement and professional development. Satisfactory completion of a training program as determined by the Secretary is a condition of engagement for persons recruited by Defence to Training classification. Training programs may include both on the job and formal external vocational or tertiary studies. Training classifications include apprentices, cadets, trainees and graduates.
The duties of a Precision Machinist / Optical Fabrication Apprentice within Defence include the following (note: not all duties are required to be performed during a 12 month performance cycle):
- Learn to use manual lathes, mills and CNC machines to produce a range of metal parts and components for Defence projects.
- Generate CNC code using various CAD/CAM programs.
- Basic fitting and maintenance of equipment.
- Learn to use a range of hand and power tools.
- Learn how to examine and understand detailed drawings and specifications.
- Learn modern machining concepts, tooling selection and drawing interpretation.
In addition to the duties above, an Optical Fabrication Apprentice can expect to perform the duties below:
- Learn optical manufacturing techniques such as single point diamond turning.
- Operate and maintain Coordinate measuring machines (CMM).
- Operate optical profilers and surface roughness interferometers.
- Learn the fundamentals of optical designs and mechanical assemblies.
**About our Team**
Research Technology and Operations (RTO) Division has a workforce of engineers, technicians, computer scientists and other professional staff who deliver a wide range of highly specialised research services and innovative solutions which underpin the operational capability of DSTG. RTO work areas undertake a broad, on demand and dynamic array of functions to keep DSTG at the forefront of research and development.
RTO work areas include:
- Research Engineering.
- Scientific computing and DSTG’s eResearch strategy.
- Development and acquisition of a world-class secure High Performance Computing (HPC) Capability for advanced modelling and simulation.
- Nationally recognised and unique research engineering capabilities.
- Specialised research safety, resource management and security services to assure sovereign S&T capabilities for Defence.
- Development and implementation of DSTG’s research infrastructure strategy.
Research Engineering (RE) provides professional and advanced manufacturing to DSTG to enable delivery of products, prototypes and models for research, development and experimentation.
RE fuses talented professional engineering and technical staff with world’s best design software and cutting edge fabrication capabilities. Through design, fabrication and prototyping, RE facilitates the transition of applied research to industry for production of military capability.
