**About the Role**
The Metabolomics Australia facility at the University of Melbourne is seeking highly motivated researchers with expertise in mass spectrometry and natural product characterization. As a Metabolomics Researcher, you will play a crucial role in establishing an advanced platform to identify bioactive metabolites produced by the human gut microbiome. The successful incumbents will be involved in ensuring the efficient use of resources, identifying future capability requirements, and will be proactive in expanding the capability of the facility.
Please note that we have 2 positions available.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Work independently on BPA funded Framework projects, as well as other projects, as directed by the MA Facility Manager and the Academic lead.
- Provide intellectual leadership and conduct internationally competitive research on grant-funded projects.
- Interact collegially and collaboratively with other team members in MA and the Australian Human Gut Metabolome Framework project.
- Contribute to preparation of publications in peer reviewed journals/books.
**Who We Are Looking For**
Your research background in biological mass spectrometry, including metabolomics, lipidomics, proteomics or analytical chemistry, will be valuable in this project. You will work closely with the Metabolomics Australia team, industry partners, and other leading platforms at the Bio21 Institute to develop, apply, and document new metabolomics capabilities and methodologies.
You will also have:
- Completion (or near completion, for appointment to Level A) of a PhD degree or related experience in analytical chemistry and biochemical assays or related discipline
- A research background in biological mass spectrometry (metabolomics, lipidomics, proteomics, analytical chemistry) and/or natural product characterization
- Experience in training and direction of research staff and students
- Experience in cultivation of microbes/tissue culture.

The University of Melbourne's Bio21 Molecular Science and Biotechnology Institute (Bio21 Institute) is a multidisciplinary research centre, specialising in biomolecular science and medical, agricultural & environmental biotechnology.
Accommodating more than 700 research scientists, students, industry participants and administrative staff, the Bio21 Institute is one of the largest biotechnology research centres in Australia.
The Metabolomics Australia facility (MA) is located in the Bio21 Institute at The University of Melbourne (UoM) and is supported by funding from the Australia National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS)/ Bioplatforms Australia and the University. MA provides state-of-the-art metabolomics services to Australian researchers from academia, industry and government and houses a wide range of advanced mass spectrometry instrumentation.
