**The Role**
Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) are seeking a highly motivate APS6 Research Safety Officer to undertake a Work Health and Safety (WHS) role in a flexible working environment. Working under broad direction, you will support senior DSTG leaders to make safety related decisions, engaging with base management and various stakeholders.
The Research Safety Officer will need to demonstrate or be prepared to develop an understanding of Defence and DSTG WHS policy and procedures and the Chemical & Biological, Radiological Laboratory Framework, compliant with current Work Health & Safety and related regulatory requirements.
In this role, you will:
- Promote WHS and provide support and guidance to divisional scientific and administration staff with their responsibilities around hazard, risk and incident reporting.
- Proactively contribute to safety risk assessments, research trials and test plans.
- Conduct and review of investigations and outcomes arising from safety incidents and near miss events.
- Lead and assist with health and safety assurance activities, including internal safety audits, workplace inspections design and conduct, identification, monitoring and follow up of corrective actions and associated reporting.
- Manage and maintain health and safety records. Working collaboratively with health and safety specialists and managers to identify, arrange and retain records of induction and hazard specific health and safety training. Ensuring all required health and safety information and records are maintained in line with legislative and Defence requirements.
- Prepare health and safety management reports for divisional and other work health and safety committees and activities as required.
- Active participation in whole of DSTG safety collaboration activities.
- Contribute to the implementation and continuous improvement of work health and safety management systems in accordance with legislation and Defence policies.
**About our Team**
Sensors and Effectors Division (SED) applies science and technology to the capability analysis, development and operation of Weapon and Combat Systems relevant to the ADF. Areas of focus include weapon guidance technologies, assessment of both weapons and combat systems, tactical information exchange, physical force protection and national security to provide Defence with the ability to meet key drivers in the weapon and combat systems domain.
Motivated safety professional with the ability to build strong relationships and achieve outcomes. Demonstrating extensive knowledge and experience in planning, managing and implementing Work Health and Safety compliance and performance in a multi-disciplinary research environment that has a complex and diverse hazard profile.
