About the role
Under Section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991. There is a genuine occupational requirement of this positions to have a lived experience in supporting someone with or with a history of mental illness and recovery.
Peer workers use the experience of their recovery journey to support people with mental health issues, through peer support, positive role modelling, education, facilitating self-advocacy and providing information and opportunities to encourage participation in the public mental health system.
WMMHSS acknowledges the nature of peer work often involves the sharing of personal lived experience in a way that is unique and may have dual relationships with the consumers, carers, and services they work for may be common, therefore WMMHSS recognises the importance of the peer worker being offered reasonable adjustments as needed.
The ideal applicant will be a person with a lived or living experience as a carer, or primary support person for someone who is accessing (or has accessed) Mental Health, Alcohol and Other Drug Services (MHAODS) and has completed or working towards a certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work, or equivalent. Or is someone who understands the unique challenges and experiences carers face when supporting someone engaging in mental health recovery. People with a carer lived experience of MHAODS and have experience from the perspective of Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander communities or are from a culturally and diverse background are encouraged to apply.
West Moreton Mental Health and Specialised Services (WMHSS) recognises the wellbeing of the workforce and has initiatives available to staff that include an Employee Assistance Program and a professional Peer Support Program.
About you
- Ability to establish and maintain relationships with carers, consumers, the community, health professionals and service providers, while promoting an understanding of mental health.
- Ability to relate, empathise with, be aware of and see issues from the perspective of a carer, consumer, their families, and people from other cultures.
- Ability to demonstrate honesty, integrity and respect for all carers, consumers, family, and staff
- Ability to show proactive and effective communication skills by actively listening, conveying carer, consumer, and family's requirements clearly and fluently, displaying appropriate empathy and adapting style accordingly.

**Mandatory Requirements**:

- Vaccinated against, and remain vaccinated against, certain vaccine preventable diseases (VPD) as outlined in the Health Employment Directive NO. 01/16
- A personal lived experience as a carer for a family member accessing mental health services (public or privat0e
