Who we are
The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) is leading Australia’s response to climate change and sustainable energy use, and protect our environment, heritage and water. The Office of the Science Convenor (OSC) provides advice to the Executive on strategic science issues. We are a small team, working to ensure that the best available science is being used to inform policy and decision making by:
- identifying and advocating for our scientists and understanding their needs
- improving science communication and policy translation
- facilitating and strengthening science partnerships across and outside government
- convening an interdepartmental Science Council of senior scientists and emerging science leaders.
**The Job**
This is a fantastic opportunity to work in a small, fast-paced team environment and presents unique on-the-job learning and development opportunities. As a member of this dynamic team, you will contribute to science strategy with a whole of department focus, working with departmental science leaders, Executive and Corporate teams. The work is diverse and varied, and you will be involved in developing and delivering activities that contribute to our science priorities in communication and engagement, strategic governance, capability, and partnerships.
In this role you will:
- work collaboratively and proactively in a small team to achieve dynamic and impactful cross-cutting outcomes for the team and the department
- contribute to the development and implementation of the team’s strategic priorities
- engage with stakeholders and develop productive working relationships
- develop innovative and engaging ways to communicate science and the work of the Office of the Science Convenor (OSC)
- provide administrative support as required e.g., for meetings/workshops and key science events such as National Science Week etc. The Office of the Science Convenor is based in Canberra. The successful applicant must be able to work flexibly and travel to Canberra for regular meetings/workshops etc.
**What we are looking for**
**Knowledge and experience**
- Relevant experience in related or similar roles.
- An understanding, or ability to develop understanding of, how science is used in the Department.
- Experience in developing communications content e.g., writing, video production, graphic design etc. is highly desirable.
- An understanding, or ability to develop understanding of, the Department’s policies and procedures.
**Skills and capabilities**
- Exceptionally strong written and verbal communication skills
- Strong organisational and time-management skills and the ability to work effectively with limited direction in a small team environment.
- Proven ability to prioritise work and deliver results, responding flexibly and positively under pressure.
- Skills to develop engaging communication products e.g., using Adobe Creative Suite, video editing software etc. are highly desirable.
**Desirable qualifications**
A tertiary qualification in science, communication, media, graphic design and/or other relevant tertiary qualification.

**Citizenship**
- To be eligible for employment with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water you must be an Australian citizen.
