In the 2021 census, one in 10 Canberrans reported having a long-term mental health condition, making it the most common long-term health condition. The ACT had the second-highest rate of long-term mental health conditions of any jurisdiction in Australia. According to ABS data, almost half of Australians have experienced a mental health condition at some point in their life, and one in five Australians experience mental ill health in any given year.

Together with their members, the Mental Health Community Coalition ACT represent the not-profit-community-managed mental health sector in the ACT. They aim to enhance partnerships, share information, engage in sector development, and provide leadership in the mental health sector, whilst informing government policy and strategic directions.

Elliott Gray are extremely pleased to be partnering exclusively with MHCC ACT yet again to recruit their new Policy and Advocacy Manager.

Joining the team in this crucial role will include you leading and managing policy development and advocacy strategies aimed at influencing mental health policies and initiatives. You will collaborate with key stakeholders to develop and implement advocacy plans, conduct research on existing mental health policies and regulations, and identify areas for improvement.

Specific skills are obviously important however as an essential - This is a position for someone who is passionate about making a difference and helping others, we are seeking someone with the ability and willingness to connect with others from all backgrounds on an empathetic level.

Let’s talk about those specific skills for a bit though.

Proven experience in policy development, advocacy, or government relations, preferably within the mental health or non-profit for a start. An understanding of the mental health policy landscape, legislation, government processes, as well as knowledge of how politics and media work will give you the edge.

This position requires a high level of organisation and attention to detail as you will be managing multiple priorities and meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Most importantly, MHCC ACT are looking for someone who is passionate about making a positive impact in the mental health sector and advancing the rights and well-being of individuals experiencing mental health challenges.

You will be joining a new CEO who is incredibly passionate about shaping the future of the mental health sector.
