This is an ongoing ‘Identified’ position which signifies that the role has a strong involvement in issues relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The successful applicant must have an understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people and an ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander People.

**About the role**

The First Nations Liaison Officer will support work across the department but focusing on the Committee Office to improve the way secretariats and committees engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, networks and organisations. The First Nations Liaison Officer may also be called upon to support community outreach activities and provide advice on social media posts issued by the Information Management Office and other activities such as the Welcome to Country when Parliament first meets following a general election.

The First Nations Liaison Officer will establish and maintain effective professional networks with a diverse range of stakeholders, particularly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and organisations. The First Nations Liaison Officer will promote and facilitate culturally appropriate interactions and communication between committees supported by the department and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and provide advice on cultural protocols and matters affecting those communities. All tasks require the First Nations Liaison Officer to exercise sound judgement, manage a range of stakeholder expectations, and navigate politically and culturally sensitive issues.

The role is Canberra based and will require some travel to regional and remote areas.
