**Who we are**
The Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) is part of the Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. As primary agency for Australia's Antarctic Program (AAP), the AAD is responsible for achieving the Australian Government's Antarctic goals.
These goals are to:

- maintain the Antarctic Treaty System and enhance Australia's influence within it
- protect the Antarctic environment
- understand the role of Antarctica in the global climate system
- undertake scientific work of practical, economic and national significance.

The AAD also has responsibility for administering the Australian Antarctic Territory and the Territory of Heard Island and McDonald Islands.

The Assets and Technology (A&T) Branch provides and maintains the equipment and infrastructure to support the AAP. A&T Branch activities range from the maintenance of existing Antarctic stations and equipment through to the design, manufacture, testing, operation and procurement of advanced scientific equipment and systems. The Branch manages major infrastructure projects in support of AAP outcomes.

The Antarctic Infrastructure Maintenance and Operation Section is responsible for the management, maintenance and engineering development of the built infrastructure at Australia's Antarctic and sub-Antarctic. The section consists of an expeditioner workforce which carries out all maintenance activities and minor construction works at the stations and a management group of engineering and technical staff at the AAD's head office.

**The Job**
The Electrical Systems Specialists support the Supervisor - Electrical, in the operation and management of Antarctic and sub-Antarctic station electrical infrastructure. This role provides technical support to electricians on Antarctic and sub-Antarctic stations, whilst planning and monitoring of on-site work programs and ensuring that works are carried out in a safe and environmentally sound manner. The position will take a leading role in fostering a strong trade safety culture and in developing systems for safe electrical trade work practices.
Key duties for the Electrical Systems Specialists include:

- Provide remote operational and maintenance expertise to station electricians for all Antarctic and sub-Antarctic Station electrical infrastructure.
- Diesel generation with cogeneration heat recovery, wind turbines, wastewater treatment facilities, reverse osmosis plants, refrigeration, heating and cooling, and fire detection systems.
- Coordination of work activities, to ensure successful completion of allocated tasks through the effective utilisation of resources using Maximo work management system.
- Support the development of science and Antarctic operational camps to ensure they are electrically safe.
- Participate in an on-call roster to provide technical support to Antarctic and Sub-Antarctic stations.
- Maintaining eligibility for required certification and authorisation.
- Collecting, recording and processing of information associated with work activities in an accurate and timely manner.
- Supervision of employees of a lower or similar classification.
- Identification, implementation and monitoring of risk control measures to provide a safe work environment.

**Note,** the successful applicant must:

- note that the position may require them to participate in an on-call roster (for which an appropriate restriction allowance will be paid) and be available to perform duty outside standard hours
- note that you may be required to perform occasional out-of-hours and weekend work
- wear appropriate protective personal equipment and clothing to comply with departmental Work Health & Safety policies and procedures

**What we are looking for**
**Knowledge and experience**
- Strong electrical experience in areas of diesel generation with cogeneration heat recovery, wind turbines, wastewater treatment facilities, reverse osmosis plants, refrigeration, heating and cooling and fire detection.
- Experience in supporting remote teams and an appreciation of the Antarctic environment and conditions is desirable.
- Experience in managing and operating various electrical systems.
- Demonstrated technical and complex problem-solving abilities.
- Knowledge of hardware and software electrical control systems optimization including SCADA, C-Bus and other logical controllers.
- Ability to prioritise and achieve specific goals and targets.
- Demonstrated ability in participating as a team member in the appropriate work site safety procedures, including sound knowledge of work health and safety standards.
- Awareness in risk assessments and job hazard analyses relating to electrical works, HV switching and/or maintenance.
- Experience in working in remote environments.
