Ecuadorian Amazon Ethnobotany Project

This project offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the culture and biodiversity of Ecuador's Amazon region.

Project Objectives

The project focuses on traditional medicine and the role of medicinal plants in addressing local epidemiological concerns. You will work with local healers, community health practitioners, and other specialists to gain insights into customs and how ancestral knowledge supports cultural heritage and health.

Responsibilities
  • Learn about traditional medicinal plants used by the Kichwa, Shuar, and mestizo communities and their reflection in local pharmacopoeias and knowledge.
  • Contribute to projects that support local medicine men and healers in disseminating information and preserving cultural heritage.
  • Participate in agroforestry farming, cultivate medicinal plants, and contribute to plant inventories to gain hands-on ethnobotanical experience.
  • Live with local host families and engage in cultural exchange to deepen understanding of the local way of life.
  • Assist with community-based activities in the evenings and on weekends, including language exchange or cultural excursions.

Day-to-Day Experience

A typical day includes breakfast with your host family, an optional morning guayusa tea ritual, morning work at an agroforestry site to learn about medicinal plants, and an afternoon of independent research or activities with local healers. Evenings may include cultural activities or language practice, with weekends offering additional opportunities for immersion.
