Senior Veterinarian
This is a unique opportunity to lead a driven and passionate team as Senior Veterinarian at Taronga Zoo in Sydney.
About the Role- The primary focus of this role involves designing and maintaining preventative medicine programs, as well as leading an experienced Wildlife Health team of vets, vet nurses, an administrative assistant, and keepers who respond to day-to-day clinical care of sick or injured zoo population animals and native wildlife admitted to the wildlife hospital.
- The role and team are also responsible for veterinary oversight of Taronga's conservation programs based at Taronga Zoo.
Key Responsibilities:
- Management of the Taronga Zoo hospital budget and team, optimising staff commitment and performance, and ensuring efficient and effective operations with regards to veterinary standards, animal welfare, legislative requirements, WHS and HR policies, audits, and records.
- Manage a veterinary team regarding professional competency, culture, and engagement.
- Support the development, implementation, and review of Taronga's vision, strategies, policies, standards, and practices for Taronga's Veterinary program.
- Provide expertise during design and construction phases of a new Taronga Wildlife Hospital.
- Undertake, assign, and manage clinical cases as required.
- Undertake approved research projects or assist with approved external and internal research projects by providing samples, specimens, and advice.
- Supervise and participate in undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary and zoological education and training.
- Provide expert assistance and advice on Zoological and Wildlife medicine to approved outside organisations and individuals in the form of consultancies, media engagements, tours, lectures, and written material.
Requirements:
- Tertiary qualifications in Veterinary Medicine or equivalent and eligible for full registration with the Veterinary Surgeons Board of NSW.
- Board certification preferred.
- International candidates encouraged to apply (Visa sponsorship considered).
- Post-graduate qualifications in zoo and wildlife medicine or accumulated experience to a similar level.
- Demonstrated knowledge and skill in all aspects of the veterinary management of zoo and wild animals, and the implementation of effective preventative medicine programs in zoos.
- Demonstrated experience with species in an open range zoo setting such as hoofstock, mega-vertebrates, macropods, etc.
- Experience in the treatment and rehabilitation of wildlife, veterinary management of free-ranging wildlife, and veterinary research.
- Demonstrated knowledge of zoo animal husbandry and management practices, including breeding, nutrition, biosecurity, animal housing, and enclosure design.
- Demonstrated leadership experience, including people, building strong stakeholder relationships, project coordination, and taking the initiative to solve problems and improve processes.
- Pre-employment TB screening, Q Fever, Rabies, and Tetanus vaccinations are a requirement of this role.
- NSW Working with Children Check.
A competitive annual package includes base salary $134,411 plus superannuation and leave loading, totaling approximately $149,655 per annum.
