Who we are seeking

State Street is looking for a skilled database administrator to enhance its Database Operations team. This team is pivotal in the design, management, and daily functioning of essential systems that support our clients' Production, Disaster Recovery, and Test environments across hybrid on-premise and cloud database settings, with a strong focus on SQL Server, Azure SQL, Snowflake, and Managed Instance Databases.

We are in search of a proficient SQL Server database performance engineer specializing in Azure environments. Ideal candidates will possess a blend of SQL database performance engineering, T-SQL development, automation, and administration expertise. The selected individual will be tasked with identifying performance bottlenecks and executing query tuning in Azure on SQL VM in IaaS and Azure SQL database. A deep understanding of SQL Server database internals and design patterns is essential, along with the ability to provide insightful problem-solving.

Key Responsibilities

As a Senior Azure Database Performance Engineer, your duties will include:

  • Ensuring the availability and optimization of MSSQL versions 2016, 2017, 2019, and 2022 in Hosted and IaaS SQL VM environments within Azure. Familiarity with Azure SQL Database and Managed Instance is preferred, and experience with Snowflake is a significant advantage.
  • Monitoring performance on application databases and queries, and recommending/applying continuous tuning.
  • Collaborating closely with application teams and other stakeholders to identify issues related to MSSQL.
  • Adhering to technical standards and operational procedures to meet database performance, High Availability, replication, scalability, and security requirements in both hosted and cloud environments.
  • Engaging in hands-on design and troubleshooting of real-time MSSQL-related issues.
  • Ensuring the tuning of database instances is conducted effectively.
  • Establishing standards to guarantee that all application design and code maintain integrity, security, and performance.
  • Conducting regular reviews of design and code to ensure compliance with site standards.
  • Providing technical support to application development teams as needed.
  • Assisting in resolving high-priority incidents to minimize impacts, participating in root-cause analysis, and supporting subsequent corrective and preventative actions.
  • Collaborating with the Database manager and various Application support and engineering teams to enhance database performance and reliability.
  • Encouraging and supporting the acquisition of relevant Azure certifications (e.g., DP-300, DP-900, AZ-900 Exam).
  • Establishing, maintaining, and adhering to State Street's technical standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Taking initiative and driving solutions to ensure that all application design and code is produced with proper integrity, security, and performance.

Education & Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related technical field.
  • 6-8 years of experience managing large MS SQL Server databases (2016, 2017, 2019, 2022) and Snowflake in a 24/7 production environment.
  • Strong performance tuning experience utilizing tools such as SolarWinds, Query Store, and Extended Events to investigate and recommend improvements for slow-performing queries and procedures at both the database and server levels.
  • At least 2 years of hands-on experience operating MS SQL servers and related technologies in Azure.
  • Comprehensive understanding of database encryption, high availability, disaster recovery, database replication, and backup/restore processes.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent written and verbal communication skills, and a proactive self-starter attitude.
  • A strong sense of customer service, attention to detail, and ownership of issues.
  • Familiarity with ITIL concepts is desirable.
