Deputy Director: Commercialisation and Partnerships

About the Role

As a key member of the University of South Australia's leadership team, you will be responsible for driving the strategic leadership and coordination of the university's intellectual property and research translation activities. This involves overseeing the creation, negotiation, and delivery of opportunities for transactions based on the university's valuable technology IP, including licenses, spinouts, and start-up companies, as well as other commercial arrangements.

You will work closely with the Chair of UniSA Ventures and oversee the operation of the UniSA Ventures entity, a wholly owned subsidiary of the university. You will also work alongside the Deputy Vice Chancellor: Research & Enterprise and Director: Enterprise Partnerships to build and maintain strong, effective relationships internally with university researchers and externally with relevant contacts and organizations within industry, government, and the investment community to secure the promotion and delivery of research translation opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement strategies for the commercialization of research and intellectual property
  • Manage the negotiation and delivery of commercial agreements
  • Build and maintain relationships with industry partners, government agencies, and other stakeholders
  • Oversee the operation of UniSA Ventures and other commercialization initiatives
  • Work with the leadership team to develop and implement the university's research translation strategy

Requirements

  • Significant experience in the commercialization of research and development, technology transfer, or intellectual property
  • Experience in managing an IP commercialization function at scale, resulting in significant achievements in regard to commercialization outcomes
  • Demonstrated ability to build and develop key strategic relationships and deliver end-to-end conversion of commercialization opportunities to support strategic objectives
  • Strong experience in high-level project management and building sound and productive relationships with diverse stakeholders
  • Extensive experience in leadership and management of people in both direct reporting line relationships and matrixed environments
  • Excellent understanding of the industry, professional, and government environments in Australia and internationally in relation to research commercialization and translation
