Department Overview

The Perioperative Service at The Royal Women's Hospital is a comprehensive department that encompasses all facets of surgical intervention for patients. This includes the Operating Theatre and the Day Surgery Unit, which operates around the clock, seven days a week. Our Operating Suite features five operating theatres, including a dedicated emergency theatre, two procedure rooms, and a ten-bay Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). We cover various surgical specialties, including Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Urogynaecology, Breast, and Oncology.

Role Summary

As a Theatre Technician, you will deliver patient-centered, evidence-based care for women and infants, collaborating within a multidisciplinary team. Grade 3 Theatre Technicians will also engage in supervisory and training responsibilities, as well as quality and governance tasks.

Your typical responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting nursing staff in preparing the operating theatre for surgical procedures
  • Supporting medical and nursing personnel in the transfer and positioning of patients
  • Facilitating the transportation of patients within and outside the operating suite
  • Assisting with tasks required upon the completion of each operation or procedure
  • Delivering specimens to the Pathology Laboratory

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, demonstrating the ability to thrive in a culturally diverse environment. A team-oriented approach is essential, along with effective planning and prioritization skills.

Qualifications include holding a Theatre Technician qualification or Certificate IV in Operating Theatre Technician Support (HLT), or actively pursuing one. We provide support for your training and education, including study leave and mentorship.

Additional qualifications include:

  • Experience working effectively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Able to work a rotating roster that includes weekdays, weekends, and night shifts
  • Prior experience as a Theatre Technician, as per the Enterprise Bargaining Agreement (ideally)
