Digital Intervention for Contraception Access
2 weeks ago
A PhD scholarship is available to develop and implement a digital consumer-focused intervention in community pharmacy. This project aims to increase access to contraception by empowering women to choose and request contraception in a pharmacy setting.
About the ProjectThe Australian government reports that 40% of women experience an unintended pregnancy during their lifetime, with one in three resulting in abortion. These unintended pregnancies may be due to non-use or inconsistent use of contraception or contraceptive failure. Women in Australia often have limited knowledge of their contraceptive options or encounter misinformation that can negatively impact on contraceptive uptake.
Community pharmacists can play a vital role in increasing access to contraception. Many women perceive pharmacies as an appropriate healthcare setting to obtain more information about contraception, and pharmacists are willing and interested to provide this care. This project will involve the development, implementation, and evaluation of a video animation that seeks to empower women to choose and request contraception in a pharmacy setting.
Required Skills and QualificationsTo be eligible for this opportunity, candidates must possess a strong research background, preferably in women's sexual and reproductive health. The successful candidate will work closely with the supervisory team, which includes Professor Danielle Mazza AM FAHMS, a nationally and internationally recognised leader in implementation research and knowledge translation in the general practice setting.
Candidates must also demonstrate excellent communication and project management skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary cohort of researchers and students.
BenefitsThis PhD scholarship offers a tax-free stipend at the current value of $36,063 per annum, as per the Monash Research Training Program (RTP) Stipend. Successful applicants who meet specific criteria may be eligible for an additional stipend of $5,000 per year.
The successful candidate will also have access to state-of-the-art facilities and resources, including the SPHERE NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in Women's Sexual and Reproductive Health in Primary Care.
About the Supervisory TeamThe principal supervisor will be Professor Danielle Mazza AM FAHMS, who has made significant contributions to advance general practice and primary healthcare in Australia. She leads the NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in Sexual and Reproductive Health for Women in Primary Care (SPHERE), which aims to improve the quality, safety, and capacity of primary healthcare services to achieve better outcomes in women's sexual and reproductive health.
Candidates are encouraged to discuss their research interests and why they would like to undertake a PhD with Professor Mazza and her team.
