Materials Engineer for Rocket Engine Tribology

We are seeking a highly skilled Materials and Processes Engineer to join our team at Blue Origin. As a key member of our spaceflight systems team, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe and reliable operation of our rocket engines.
Key Responsibilities- Provide tribology support for rocket engine mechanisms, including seals, bearings, and sliding interfaces.
- Collaborate with component design engineers to select material systems that meet design requirements.
- Assist in developing wear-resistant materials and finishes for high-performance vehicle mechanisms.
- Identify and mitigate lubrication and wear risks in high-performance vehicle mechanisms.
- Recommend and implement coupon testing to screen materials for wear life and damage modalities.
- Collaborate with suppliers to ensure all processes, coatings, and finishes meet design and qualification requirements.
- Identify technology gaps in rocket engine tribological interfaces and complete development efforts to improve technology readiness for future designs.
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Materials Science Engineering, or related field.
- At least 5+ years of experience in materials and processes engineering, with a focus on tribology.
- Hands-on experience developing test plans, measuring, and characterizing friction and wear of tribological systems.
- Fundamental understanding of material interfaces in relative motion and their behavior in high-vibration environments.
- Masters or PhD in engineering, materials science, or related field.
- Experience with contact analysis and wear modeling.
- Demonstrated experience supporting flight production programs.
- Proven experience leading technology development projects, measuring technical progress, resources, and handling budgets.
- Experience with statistical analysis methods and related tools.
- Experience running ambient, elevated temperature, and cryogenic thermomechanical testing.
