We are seeking a highly skilled Materials & Processes Engineer III to join our team at Blue Origin. As a key member of our rocket engine development team, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe and reliable operation of our engines through the application of tribological principles.
Key Responsibilities- Collaborate with component design engineers to develop and implement tribological solutions for rocket engine mechanisms, including seals, bearings, and sliding interfaces.
- Assist in the selection of material systems that meet design requirements, considering factors such as wear resistance, corrosion, and thermal stability.
- Identify and mitigate lubrication and wear risks in high-performance vehicle mechanisms, ensuring optimal performance and reliability.
- Develop and implement test plans to screen materials for wear life and damage modalities, and collaborate with suppliers to ensure compliance with design and qualification requirements.
- Contribute to the development of new technologies and processes to improve tribological interfaces and reduce risks in rocket engine systems.
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Materials Science Engineering, or related field.
- At least 5+ years of experience in materials & processes engineering, with a focus on tribology.
- Hands-on experience developing test plans, measuring, and characterizing friction and wear of tribological systems containing metallic and non-metallic elements.
- Fundamental understanding of material interfaces in relative motion, and ability to support design decisions with respect to operation in high-vibration environments.
- Masters or PhD in engineering, materials science, or related field.
- Experience with methods of contact analysis and wear modeling.
- Demonstrated experience supporting flight production programs.
- Proven experience leading technology development projects, measuring technical progress, resources, and handling budgets.
- Experience with statistical analysis methods and related tools.
