Materials & Processes Engineer III - Rocket Engine Tribology Specialist

Blue Origin is seeking a highly skilled Materials & Processes Engineer III to join our team in the development of rocket engine tribological systems. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for providing technical expertise and leadership in the design, development, and testing of materials and processes for rocket engine mechanisms.
Key Responsibilities- Collaborate with component design engineers to provide tribology support for rocket engine mechanisms, including seals, bearings, and sliding interfaces.
- Develop and implement wear testing and analysis methods to ensure the reliability and performance of rocket engine components.
- Identify and mitigate lubrication and wear risks in high-performance vehicle mechanisms.
- Recommend and implement coupon testing to screen materials for wear life and damage modalities.
- Collaborate with suppliers to ensure that all processes, coatings, and finishes meet design and qualification requirements.
- Identify technology gaps in rocket engine tribological interfaces and develop solutions to improve technology readiness for future designs.
- Minimum B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Materials Science Engineering, or related field.
- At least 5+ years of experience in materials & processes engineering, with a focus on tribology.
- Hands-on experience developing test plans, measuring, and characterizing friction and wear of tribological systems containing metallic and non-metallic elements.
- Fundamental understanding of material interfaces in relative motion and their behavior in high-vibration environments.
- Masters or PhD in engineering, materials science, or related field.
- Experience in methods of contact analysis and wear modeling.
- Demonstrated experience supporting flight production programs.
- Proven experience leading technology development projects, measuring technical progress, resources, and handling budgets.
- Experience with statistical analysis methods and related tools.
- Experience running ambient, elevated temperature, and cryogenic thermomechanical testing.
Blue Origin offers a competitive compensation package, including a base salary range of $111,690-$156,366, depending on location. We also offer a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, basic and supplemental life insurance, paid parental leave, short and long-term disability, 401(k) with a company match of up to 5%, and an Education Support Program.
