Position Overview:
The Lead Coordinator for Animal Research Ethics and Safety will play a pivotal role in offering expert counsel and direction regarding Animal Ethics and pertinent research policies and regulations to essential research stakeholders, including the University’s Animal Ethics and Institutional Biosafety Committees as well as senior management.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide high-level advisory services and, in collaboration with the Animal Ethics and Institutional Biosafety Committees, execute University-wide policy modifications related to animal ethics, biosafety, and biosecurity protocols.
- Oversee and guide the Animal Ethics and Biosafety Advisors who assist in the administration of the Animal Ethics Committee and the Institutional Biosafety Committees.
- Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the Animal Ethics and Institutional Biosafety Committees, which includes recruiting new members and managing regulatory reporting.
- Maintain oversight of governance, compliance, and policy guidance in Animal Ethics, Biosafety, and Biosecurity, while developing and preserving accessible documentation for researchers.
- Manage renewals, variations, and annual inspections of animal and biosafety/biosecurity licenses and certifications.
- Deliver training sessions for researchers in the areas of Animal Ethics and Biosafety.
- Report any breaches of responsible research conduct to the appropriate committees and assist in follow-up investigations.
Qualifications:
- A postgraduate degree with a minimum of 5 years of experience in animal research, gene technology, and/or biomedical research, or equivalent research compliance experience in an academic or medical research environment.
- Proficient understanding of the legislation, regulations, and standards affecting research involving animals and biological agents, with the ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders.
- Experience in regulatory compliance management, including conducting inspections and audits.
- Demonstrated leadership and management capabilities, with experience in fostering a cohesive and effective team.
- Proven track record in developing and implementing policies and procedures within an academic setting.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to manage relationships with key research stakeholders.
- Ability to manage tasks and projects independently, adapt to changing priorities, and demonstrate initiative in problem-solving.
- Experience in developing and delivering effective training programs in animal ethics and biosafety.
- Proven ability to collaborate within a team environment where knowledge and expertise are shared.
