Role Overview

The NSW Department of Communities and Justice is seeking a highly skilled Environmental Sustainability Specialist to join our team. As an integral part of our Housing Portfolio, you will play a pivotal role in contributing to the development and implementation of policies, strategies, and projects focused on environmental sustainability.

This includes initiatives aimed at improving resource efficiency, supporting sustainable communities, adapting to climate change, reducing environmental risks, and continuously enhancing environmental performance.

Your Responsibilities

  1. Policy Review and Analysis: Review relevant environmental sustainability policies, strategies, and legislation at federal, state, and local levels (including international frameworks) that affect the Housing Portfolio. Identify emerging trends and regulatory requirements.
  2. Stakeholder Collaboration: Collaborate with key internal and external stakeholders to develop evidence-based environmental sustainability policies, processes, and procedures aligned with the Housing Portfolio's corporate direction and government priorities.
  3. Project Leadership: Lead and manage environmental sustainability projects, including the development of project plans, business cases, and consultant briefs. Oversee external consultants and ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and with agreed objectives.
  4. Briefing and Reporting: Prepare briefing material for senior Housing Portfolio staff and provide regular updates on policy progress and emerging challenges.
  5. Benchmarks and Strategies: Work as part of a team to research and create relevant benchmarks, indicators, and strategies that support the Housing Portfolio's environmental sustainability goals and align with corporate priorities.

About You

  • Tertiary qualifications in environmental science, asset management, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • A strong understanding of environmental sustainability issues, asset management practices, and social housing initiatives.
  • Demonstrated expertise in research, policy development, analytical thinking, and project management.
  • A proven track record of successfully developing and implementing environmental policies and sustainability projects in complex operational settings.
