Context:
The Australia and New Zealand Business Platform (BP ANZ) manages and develops the group's trading activities for these regions, focusing on four key pillars: risk management and market access, asset management, green solutions, and energy supply businesses.
The BP ANZ team's missions include supporting the development and operations of other Global Business Units in risk representation and risk management, and developing a commercial franchise that contributes to overall risk management and generates value.
The GEMS ANZ Analytics team develops market insights and quantitative models to optimize dispatchable assets, forecast customer consumptions, risk manage positions, assess long-term prices, value hedging products, and shape strategy.
This role provides subject matter expertise for quantitative commodity trading models built by the Analytics team, generating analysis and insights that lead to improved decision-making across GEMS ANZ and the wider ANZ business.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop quantitative financial models to value energy derivatives (Power, Green, Gas)
- Engage with the Forward Trading and Commercial teams to develop and operate models and tools to support trading decisions
- Work with the Head of Analytics or Head of Forward Power Trading on complex tasks with minimal assistance from Manager
- Ensure analytical work is complete to a high standard and on time, while regularly communicating project status
- Provide thought leadership and creativity in developing innovative solutions to new problems, together with the Head of Analytics and Principal Analyst Quantitative Modelling
- Proactively suggest new possibilities for analytics/projects to the Head of Analytics and Head of Forward Power Trading
Requirements:
- Tertiary degree in a relevant discipline
- Masters/PhD in Quantitative Discipline (Maths/Physics/Engineering) favourable
- Experience in wholesale electricity, gas, and financial markets (ideally in Australia) and the fundamentals of how these markets operate and interact
- Technical/programming skills, including SQL, Microsoft Excel, coding in R and Python, and statistical skills
Soft skills:
- Organisation, analysis, and interpretation of numerical data
- Excellent analytical thinker and problem solver
- Project Leadership and mentoring of junior team members
