Landcare NSW is the representative body of the Landcare movement in NSW, serving as the voice of community Landcare. Our Council represents around 60,000 Landcarers and 3000 groups, meeting three to four times a year. The organisation is overseen by an eight-member executive and a small team of part-time staff. Our structure enables the building of skills, capacity, strength, and connections at every level, from individual groups to district networks, to regional associations, to the state peak body, and right through to the National Landcare Network.
We acknowledge and pay respect to Aboriginal People and Torres Strait Islander People, who are the original owners of the land, seas, and water. We recognize their continuing connection to the land and their deep knowledge of the natural environment.
Our HistoryIn 2007, a group of volunteers recognized a need for a unified voice to represent the State's dedicated community Landcarers, leading to the establishment of Landcare NSW. After months of consultation and planning, an inaugural meeting was held in Sydney, followed by the first Muster in Tamworth in October 2007. Since then, every two years, Landcarers from across the state gather at musters to harness ideas and discuss issues.
Our MissionOur mission is to protect, repair, regenerate, and change practice. We also learn, share, and connect. Landcarers work across farmland, bushland, parkland, beaches, national parks, rivers, dunes, creeks, Crown land, public land, private land, forests, and travelling stock routes. We are a grassroots movement organized into groups and organizations, some purely voluntary with half a dozen members, while others are substantial organizations that employ paid staff and have significant budgets.
Collective action is at the heart of our success: Landcare groups organize projects, support volunteers, seek funding, and develop partnerships. We have transformed the landscape and are at the forefront of dealing with environmental, agricultural, and social challenges facing Australia.
Our ValuesWe are open, inclusive, and welcoming, regardless of age, gender, and cultural background. Our activities include:
- Bush regeneration and weed control
- Revegetation
- Repairing eroding gullies and stabilizing riverbanks
- Collecting litter
- Creating and repairing walking tracks
- Protecting threatened species
- Stabilizing sand dunes
- Working with councils on installing litter traps
We also participate in workshops, field days, site tours, and collaborative learning.
About the RoleThe Landcare Capacity Building Officer will work with Landcare member groups and the Regional and Local Landcare Coordinators to enhance and build the capacity of Landcare Member organizations to meet their strategic targets, thereby lifting the overall performance and value provided by Landcare in NSW.
The successful candidate will have:
- Tertiary qualifications in business management and/or
- Proven experience in leading/managing a small commercial or NFP organization, with responsibility for governance, financial management, operations, and human resources;
- Excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills;
- Business development and/or fundraising experience will be considered an asset;
- Excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing;
- Excellent negotiation and conflict resolution skills;
- Able to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively;
- Be a self-starter and able to work alone as well as part of a geographically dispersed team;
- Has a strong sense of purpose
- Has a strategic mind-set but is also able to identify issues at a micro scale
The Landcare Capacity Building Officer will be responsible and accountable for:
- Reviewing and assessing Local Priority Plans to see how coordinators are tracking against plan
- Ensuring day-to-day Coordinator activities are aligned with Program Outcomes
- Flagging issues in a timely manner with Host Organizations
- Collating information from the regions and identifying which regions are doing well or not
- Building an online Health Check tool that identifies what and where weaknesses are
- Working with the NSW Landcare Program manager and the LNSW CEO to design member services that will mitigate identified weaknesses
- Supporting data collection via program and at each reporting period
- Enabling Landcare Networks to bid for FFS projects
- Working in conjunction with RCoP Coordinator to develop CCC Workshops
This is a 0.8 FTE part-time position, offering a flexible working environment. As a part-time position, your fixed days and hours each week are negotiable at the start of the employment contract.
