About the Opportunity

John Holland is expanding its operations in response to significant government investment in the Sunshine Coast region over the next decade.

As part of this growth, we are seeking experienced Senior Environmental Specialists to join our team and contribute to major projects in Energy, Tunnels, Dams, Water, and Transport Infrastructure.

About the Role

This senior role reports directly to the Project Director and is based locally on the Sunshine Coast. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring project compliance with relevant environmental legislation, regulations, contractual obligations, and John Holland's Health, Safety, and Environmental procedures through the development, implementation, and maintenance of a comprehensive project-wide environmental management system.

The key responsibilities of this role include:

  • Providing day-to-day specialist environmental support to internal stakeholders, including Group and Regional Environment teams.
  • Developing approval submission documents and implementing conditions of approval.
  • Identifying and effectively managing environmental risks.
  • Developing, managing, and leading the continuous technical improvement of project environmental management systems.
  • Liaising proactively with government bodies and professional organizations on environmental matters.
  • Establishing, monitoring, and reporting on key environmental performance objectives and standards for managing project environmental risks.
  • Developing and implementing project inspection, auditing, and review processes.
  • Communicating environmental roles and responsibilities, reviewing project team environmental competencies, and identifying training/development needs.
  • Managing environmental budget allocation as required to ensure environmental management is undertaken in a cost-effective manner.
  • Managing environmental consultants and subcontractors and collecting environmental field monitoring information.
  • Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of all relevant legal, regulatory, and company environmental requirements, ensuring management and staff are informed of any relevant changes to project requirements.
  • Supporting the development and continuous improvement of John Holland's environmental management systems.
  • Performing all duties in accordance with John Holland policies, processes, systems, and procedures.

To succeed in this role, you will need:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Engineering, Science, Sustainability, or other related disciplines.
  • Postgraduate qualifications advantageous, e.g., graduate certificate or graduate diploma in Environmental, Risk, Sustainability, Project Management, or other related disciplines.
  • Construction environment management experience (5+ years).
  • Generalist Environment & Approvals experience (5+ years).
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and Local environmental statutes and legislation.
  • Knowledge of relevant management systems (quality and risk).
  • Training and facilitation experience in high-risk environmental activities such as spill response.
  • Skill in quantitative and qualitative environmental risk assessment and development of risk controls and actions involved in delivery and implementation of projects.
  • Skills in monitoring, reviewing, investigative review techniques, reporting, and continuous improvement on performance, compliance, and defects/non-conformance.
  • Expert understanding of incident investigations and reporting.
  • Ability to lead high-level investigations involving multiple internal and external parties.
  • Specialist environment management (5+ years).
  • Leadership and management (5+ years).
  • Environmental Management Systems AZ/NZS ISO 14001.
