Varroa Neurotransmitter Receptor Research Position

This is a research fellow role in Varroa neurotransmitter receptor biology. We are seeking an experienced researcher with expertise in molecular biology, genetics, and pharmacology.

The Opportunity

You will be part of a groundbreaking Australian Research Council Discovery Project focused on developing targeted miticides for safeguarding Australian bees. This project aims to eliminate Varroa mites while keeping bees safe. You will contribute to world-first solutions using cutting-edge approaches in bioinformatics, molecular cloning of Varroa ligand-gated ion channel targets, miticide design via molecular docking, functional assays, dsRNA design, and in vitro and in vivo testing of novel miticides. The work involves collaboration with multiple sites, with outcomes that have environmental and economic impact for Australia.

Your Responsibilities

  • Conduct innovative research projects aligned with your expertise and our priorities. Use rigorous methodologies and stay current with field advancements.
  • Publish research findings through high-impact journals, conferences, and scholarly outlets. Contribute to our research reputation.
  • Collaborate with the research team to engage in collaborative efforts, foster a productive research environment, and contribute to interdisciplinary projects.
  • Secure research funding by participating in securing grants and funding opportunities to support projects; articulate potential impact to attract external support.
  • Contribute to research impact by communicating outcomes to stakeholders, including academic peers, policymakers, and the public, demonstrating societal impact.

About You

We seek a motivated researcher with a strong track record of high-quality publications, methodological expertise, and a collaborative approach. You pursue research funding proactively and are dedicated to delivering impactful work that addresses real-world challenges and makes a lasting difference in your field.

Your Qualifications

  • Completion of a doctoral qualification in a relevant field with experience as a laboratory-based researcher;
  • Foundational knowledge of molecular biology, genetics, and pharmacology. Expertise in neurotransmitter receptors or parasitology is desirable;
  • Demonstrated ability in molecular/cellular biology techniques, including RNA preparation, cDNA synthesis, PCR, molecular cloning, plasmid preparation, mutagenesis, DNA sequencing, and in vitro transcription of mRNA;
  • Experience in designing and implementing in vitro or in vivo insecticide/miticide assays;
  • Refereed publications and evidence of quality outputs with clear attribution of individual contributions;
  • External funding awarded in the last five years (internal grants considered for fellowship applicants);
  • Esteem measures such as keynote talks, invitations to present, prizes/awards, and committee memberships;
  • Technology transfer and outreach activities (including engagement with external partners);
  • Supervision of research students (considerations include supervision of higher degree research students and completions).
