Exploring the role of brown food webs in arid ecosystems is a key area of research. We are seeking a PhD candidate to investigate this topic and contribute to our understanding of how these ecosystems function.

Project Overview

Arid ecosystems have traditionally been viewed through the lens of green food webs, focusing on living plants, herbivores, and their predators. However, with little plant growth due to dry conditions, where does the energy that sustains these ecosystems come from during dry times?

The proposed solution involves investigating the structure and function of brown food webs in arid ecosystems using remote sensing, field surveys, and DNA meta-barcoding. This will involve determining the role of brown food webs in sustaining birds, small mammals, bats, and reptiles during wet and dry periods.

Research Objectives
  • To develop a comprehensive understanding of brown food webs in arid ecosystems and their contribution to ecosystem functioning.
  • To determine the impact of brown food webs on bird, small mammal, bat, and reptile populations in arid ecosystems.
Requirements

We are looking for a student with a passion for field ecology and skills in quantitative methods, holding a First-Class Honours degree (or equivalent evidence of research ability). The ideal candidate will be able to design and implement a research project that addresses the research objectives outlined above.

Field research will be conducted at Witchelina Reserve in South Australia and Fowlers Gap Arid Zone Research Station in New South Wales.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills.
