The School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences is a large, collaborative and multi-disciplinary school in the Faculty of Science at the University of New South Wales with over 150 academic, research and professional staff. The School incorporates a broad range of disciplines, enabling comprehensive education and research in the broad fields of Earth Science, Geology, Environmental Science, Physical Geography, Climate Science, Evolutionary Biology, Ecology and Marine Science.
The Ecologist/Principal Ecologist for Ecosystem Monitoring is in the Centre for Ecosystem Science. The incumbent is expected to lead and coordinate research into the design, implementation and analysis of ecosystem monitoring to support a risk-based adaptive management approach to conservation of conservation areas, including protected areas, across diverse land tenures in Australia under the 'Tracking ecosystems and adapting management to change' project.
The Ecologist/Principal Ecologist contributes to the design of monitoring projects, coordinates monitoring, data management and analysis, collaborates with other research fellows and project leaders and leads risk assessments to support the development of risk-reduction strategies.
The Ecosystem Monitoring Ecologist/Principal Ecologist is expected to conduct research in ecosystem monitoring and risk analysis and to carry out activities to develop their research expertise, relevant to their particular field of research. The Ecologist/Principal Ecologist is also expected to support research by postgraduates and collaborate with other researchers in ecosystem monitoring and risk assessment, including supervision of students.

- Full-time (35 hours per week)
The Ecologist/Principal Ecologist reports to the 'Tracking ecosystems' Project Lead Professor Richard Kingsford, works with the project staff and may supervise casual field staff.
**Specific responsibilities for this role include**:
**LEVEL B**:
- Coordinate ecosystem monitoring and risk assessment for the 'Tracking ecosystems and adapting management to change' Project, including liaising with stakeholders, management and monitoring staff.
- Implementation of the Ecological Health and Monitoring Framework for state-managed Protected Areas, involving surveys of flora and fauna and abiotic variables and associated reporting.
- Coordinate research in the Tracking Ecosystems Project including contributing to contractual compliance for all research related documentation and procedures.
- Engage in individual and/or collaborative research in a manner consistent with disciplinary practice, focusing on ecosystem monitoring and risk assessment.
- Create scholarly impact in the discipline which is recognised by peers in the advancement of disciplinary knowledge, including through peer reviewed publications.
- Conduct research/scholarly activities under limited supervision, either independently or as a member of a team (as per the norms of the discipline).
- Mentor and guide students and colleagues and develop the next generation of academics through involvement in teaching of undergraduates and supervision of HDRs and honours students (as per the norms of the discipline).
- Support the dissemination of research outcomes through appropriate channels and outlets.
- Present at national and international conferences as relevant to the project.

- Lead the design, oversee and coordinate research in the Tracking ecosystems Project including contractual compliance for all research related documentation and procedures.
- Establish a personal research portfolio and develop independent research proposals.
- Play a significant role in the leadership of research projects, including leading significant research proposals submitted to competitive and/or other funding bodies, consistent with that of a national leader in conservation management.
