Team Overview

The Platform and Data Group serves as a pivotal technology hub, catering to the needs of technology teams throughout REA. Essential Services and Operations, part of Platform and Data, is a cohesive services team that supports the REA business across various technology domains, including Infrastructure, Platform, and Data.

We deliver services, support, and develop platform products and tools that empower teams to achieve their objectives, including:

  • Streaming data capabilities and Event-Driven Architecture at REA.
  • Developer Platform Tooling for diverse cloud providers.
  • SRE and platform observability tools.
  • Monitoring, supporting, and enhancing the technology landscape for REA, focusing on maintenance and cost efficiency.

Daily Responsibilities

This role is distinct from a conventional Senior Data Engineer position. While it entails hands-on technical work and the expertise to support significant areas of REA's data initiatives, the ideal candidate will also engage with the business to comprehend their needs and facilitate their data progression. This position demands extensive collaboration and consultation with both technical and non-technical stakeholders at all levels to enhance the overall data capabilities of the business. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Collaborating closely with partner teams to evaluate and enhance their data maturity in alignment with platform standards and data management frameworks.
  • Advocating for data management practices by representing the 'Voice of the Business.'
  • Writing, testing, and documenting code in accordance with REA Engineering standards.
  • Designing, building, testing, deploying, and maintaining platform software and systems across various technologies and disciplines.
  • Contributing to platform and product initiatives.
  • Collaborating on solution designs and addressing technical challenges.
  • Mentoring less experienced team members.
  • Maintaining existing platform products and services, including bug fixes and routine feature enhancements.
  • Supporting production systems.
  • Our team operates across multiple Australian states, so you should be comfortable collaborating remotely and continuously seeking improvements in our workflows.
  • Contributing to robust technical and engineering practices within the team.
  • Reviewing and providing feedback on pull requests and engineering documentation.

Candidate Profile

  • A minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in the industry, encompassing software engineering, data engineering, and platform engineering.
  • Proficient knowledge across various data management functions, including data governance, metadata management, data quality management, master data management, data modeling, data design, and data security.
  • A strong passion for data technologies, services, and platforms.
  • Excellent communication skills with a collaborative approach to working with stakeholders and the tech community to develop optimal products.
  • A solutions-oriented mindset when faced with challenging situations.
  • Familiarity with modern software engineering practices, including test-driven development, CI/CD, and DevOps methodologies.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code and cloud technologies.
  • Exposure to Platform Engineering concepts, such as developer tooling and experiences.
  • Experience with real-time and streaming data frameworks, such as Kafka, AWS Kinesis, or Flink is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in Python, Kubernetes, Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, and CDK is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of Site Reliability Engineering is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Event-Driven Architecture (EDA) or real-time and streaming data systems is highly desirable.
