Lead Conservation Scientist

As a senior leader in conservation science, you will oversee the development and implementation of innovative strategies for species recovery and biodiversity restoration. This role provides intellectual leadership across scientific priorities and offers autonomy to build and grow a small research-focused team.

You will cultivate a hub of scientific inquiry and innovation, ensuring our conservation strategies are informed by cutting-edge research and best practice. Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing and implementing comprehensive plans for species recovery and biodiversity restoration;
  • Building and maintaining strategic partnerships with universities, government agencies, research institutions, and conservation bodies;
  • Overseeing scientific integrity across all projects, ensuring data-driven decision-making and rigorous monitoring and evaluation;

For this role, we seek an individual with postgraduate qualifications in conservation ecology or a related field, along with minimum 10 years' professional experience in conservation ecology, preferably with strong field-based experience and subsequent team leadership experience. Proven track records in leading complex, multi-stakeholder science or conservation programs are also essential. The ideal candidate should possess the ability to think strategically and align with organisational mission, culture, and goals. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are required to effectively convey scientific information to diverse stakeholders. Experience in translating complex ecological science into policy influence and practical conservation delivery is also desirable.
