Structural Designer
At SpaceX, we're building a future where humanity is out exploring the stars. As a Structural Designer, you'll play a crucial role in developing the technologies to make this possible.
About the Role
As a Structures Engineer at SpaceX, your primary responsibility will be to develop design concepts from scratch and size vehicle structures based on flight loads. You'll work closely with peers from different vehicle systems to balance mass, cost, and capability. Your detailed designs will implement structural concepts and generate CAD models in NX for components, assemblies, and vehicle integration.
Detailed Responsibilities
- Develop design concepts and create detailed designs to implement structural concepts and generate CAD models
- Collaborate with peers to balance mass, cost, and capability
- Create finite element models to assess designs and analyze structures to prove they meet requirements
- Apply hand calculations and empirical formulas to assess and iterate on designs rapidly
- Validate designs by building development articles to test individual joints and design elements for strength
- Perform structural testing on subassemblies and full sections of the airframe
- Partner with build engineers and technicians to improve designs
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering
- 1+ years of experience designing, analyzing, or building structures
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Experience creating and tinkering with projects
- Ability to communicate complex topics effectively
- Demonstrated experience driving significant outcomes
- Proven application of passion and curiosity to learn, build, and complete impactful projects
- Experience transitioning products from design to manufacturing and optimizing for high-volume
- Proven experience designing metallic structures, ideally stainless-steel
- Ability to make informed executive decisions
Additional Requirements
Must be available to work extended hours and weekends as needed.
