About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Associate or Special Counsel to join our Dispute Resolution team, working on public law litigation matters. The public sector practice is a national priority of Hall & Wilcox and is rapidly growing.

You will sit within our national Dispute Resolution section, which is comprised of over 95 team members nationally. We provide the full range of legal services to our public sector clients, bringing both deep expertise and a fresh perspective to their matters. We partner with clients at all levels of government, with key clients including local councils, the Victorian State Government and other large corporate entities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Be an integral part of the team with responsibility for running matters directly with counsel and the client through to trial (in the Supreme Court of Victoria, Court of Appeal and VCAT);
  • Act on behalf of, and advise, all levels of government on a diverse range of administrative law and commercial dispute matters;
  • Draft court documents, advices, briefs to counsel and correspondence;
  • Provide specialist legal advice on complex legal issues, including statutory interpretation, administrative law, compulsory acquisition and commercial disputes.
Requirements
  • A minimum of 5 years of post-admission experience;
  • Ideally you will have a background in public law disputes, with a strong academic record;
  • We will also consider candidates who have experience in general commercial litigation or property or construction law, with a passion for public law and a strong desire to work on public sector matters, in particular compulsory land acquisition;
  • Excellent legal drafting and analytical skills, with outstanding attention to detail;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills;
  • The willingness to supervise and mentor junior members of the team as appropriate;
  • The ability to confidently run matters through the dispute resolution process, as well as the ability to handle a busy workload with competing timelines.
