We are seeking a skilled Conservation Officer to join our team at the National Library of Australia.
About the RoleThis is an ongoing APS 4 position in the Collection Care Section of the Collection Branch. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for conserving and preserving the Library's collection for access now and future generations across the world.
You will work across a diverse range of preservation activities and projects on key voices in Australian history. You will have opportunities to develop your technical skills as you contribute to a dynamic and collaborative team.

ResponsibilitiesAs a Conservation Officer, you will be responsible for:
- Facilitating access to the Library's collection through a range of Library activities and strategically focused preservation actions;
- Working across a range of work priorities including annual prioritised treatment programs, exhibitions and loans programs, new acquisition programs, strategic preventive conservation programs, and digitisation projects;
- Liaising with Library staff on a broad range of preservation issues, including providing training on collection handling and advice on storage and housing requirements;
To be successful in this role, you will need to have:
- Good hand skills, evidence of manual dexterity, practical approaches, and ability to work across a range of collection material types;
- The ability to carry out complex conservation treatments on individual items and engage with broader collection-wide preservation approaches;
- Flexibility and adaptability;
- The ability to communicate complex technical issues to a broad audience;
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work well individually with limited supervision as well as working collaboratively in a team;
- Liaise with internal and external stakeholders regarding the delivery of their responsibilities;
- Show initiative and seek to advance preservation and broader Library goals;
The salary for this position is approximately $67,000 - $85,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications. The Library also offers a range of benefits, including flexible working arrangements, professional development opportunities, and a supportive work environment.
