Conservation Officer Role Overview

The National Library of Australia is seeking a skilled Conservation Officer to join the Collection Care Section of the Collection Branch.

As a Conservation Officer, you will play a critical role in facilitating access to the Library's collection through a range of activities and strategically focused preservation actions.

Main Responsibilities

  • Conduct conservation treatments on individual items and engage with broader collection-wide preservation approaches.
  • Work across a range of collection material types, including physical collections and digitisation projects.
  • Liaise with Library staff on preservation issues, providing training and advice on collection handling and storage requirements.
  • Contribute to the development of strategic preventive conservation programs, including environmental monitoring and pest checking.
  • Support the delivery of exhibitions and loans programs, preparing and installing objects for display and/or loan.

Key Qualifications

  • Good hand skills and manual dexterity, with ability to work across a range of collection material types.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical issues to a broad audience.
  • Flexibility and adaptability in a team environment.
  • Initiative and willingness to advance preservation and broader Library goals.
