An exciting opportunity exists for a Senior Science Policy Advisor within the Defence innovation, science and technology space. As a Senior Science Policy Advisor, you will lead the development of strategic plans to ensure Defence has appropriate capabilities to support scientific advice and innovative technology solutions.
This is achieved through advising senior leadership on the capacity and capability of Defence to deliver scientific advice and innovative solutions; ensuring Defence's strategic direction aligns with broader government objectives and guidance; coordinating Defence's contribution to whole-of-government strategic science policy and supporting management of the enterprise.
The position requires strong analytical skills; experience in business intelligence, data collection and analysis; the development and implementation of strategic policy; and an ability to work effectively across diverse stakeholders.
The responsibilities of the role include but are not limited to leading a team to ensure effective:
- Strategic planning and benchmarking for Defence innovation, science and technology.
- Collection and analysis of complex data from across Defence divisions and business intelligence analysis.
- Advice to senior management on the application of Defence resources and scientific developments to meet national security requirements.
- Development of work to anticipate and resolve capability issues from a Defence perspective in order to meet strategic objectives.
- Preparation of briefs and correspondence as required on issues relating to Defence's capacity and capability to deliver scientific advice and innovative technology solutions.
This position has people management responsibility and, as such, will be required to exercise people management skills and knowledge to build and lead a high-performing and cohesive team.

The Defence innovation, science and technology directorate develops strong relationships both within Defence and nationally, as well as across government and with industry and academia. Our mission is to understand Defence's strategic context, develop approaches for Defence to respond to this context, advocate for Defence science, and ensure world-leading best practice shapes Defence's policy and strategy approach.
Our Ideal Candidate
The suitable candidate will have demonstrated high-level experience in leading and developing strategic plans to support deliverables. Tertiary qualifications in STEM (or equivalent experience) is highly desirable.
The ideal candidate will have:
- A critical thinker who is able to convey complex ideas and strategies succinctly;
- Strong ability to communicate and clearly articulate recommendations and advice to senior leaders;
- Proven ability to cultivate and sustain productive relationships with stakeholders across Government, academia and industry;
- Accomplished in business intelligence analysis;
- Excellent written abilities and proven experience in briefing senior leaders;
- Strong people management skills;
- Experience in building and leading a high-performing and cohesive team
