About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and skilled Senior Curator of Indigenous Australian Art to join our dynamic team at Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art. This is a key opportunity for a talented professional to contribute to the development, research, documentation, display, and interpretation of our collection.

The successful candidate will have a broad working knowledge of Indigenous Australian Art and the capacity to work with artists and stakeholders. They will be responsible for researching and cataloging artworks, preparing works for exhibition, recommending acquisitions, assisting with community representation and stakeholder liaison, and caring for, promoting, and managing the Indigenous Australian Art Collection within the Australian Art Department.

This role requires strong curatorial skills, excellent communication and project management abilities, and a passion for Indigenous Australian Art. The ideal candidate will be highly motivated, able to work independently, and as part of a team, with a commitment to delivering high-quality results in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Contribute to the development of the Indigenous Australian Art Collection through research, documentation, and acquisition activities.
  • Work closely with artists, stakeholders, and colleagues to develop exhibitions and interpretive programs that showcase the richness and diversity of Indigenous Australian Art.
  • Develop and implement effective strategies for engaging audiences and building relationships with community groups and stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with other departments to promote the Indigenous Australian Art Collection and engage audiences through various channels.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A tertiary qualification in art history, visual arts, museum studies, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in a similar curatorial role, with a strong understanding of Indigenous Australian Art and its cultural significance.
  • Excellent communication and project management skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • A passion for Indigenous Australian Art and a commitment to its continued growth and development.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to think creatively and outside the box.
