Geopolitical Risk and Engagement Expert

Our organization seeks an exceptional Geopolitical Risk and Engagement Advisor to contribute to the UNSW National Security Team.

About the Role:

  • Provide expert guidance on foreign interference, geopolitical risk, dual-use technologies, Defence Trade Controls, and sanctions.
  • Collaborate with faculty leadership to advance a University-wide approach to foreign risk.
  • Foster education and awareness, shape organisational culture, conduct due diligence, and implement effective risk mitigation strategies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Undertake risk assessments and provide advice on collaborations and agreements with international partners in critical or sensitive research areas.
  • Review prospective international partnerships and conduct thorough due diligence on foreign partners to identify potential foreign interference and conflicts of interest.
  • Lead the rollout of educational materials and training to improve awareness of foreign interference and compliance responsibilities within Faculty of Engineering.
  • Engage with government agencies on evolving risk associated with foreign interference, critical technologies, and Defence Trade Controls.
  • Review placements of new hires and visiting academics to ensure risk management of technology.

Requirements:

  • Experience in geopolitics, international relations, or a related field.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
