Staff Lawyer

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Staff Lawyer to join our team at the Indigenous Justice Centre. As a Staff Lawyer, you will play a critical role in providing legal representation to Indigenous clients facing criminal charges and child protection matters.
About the Role:The Staff Lawyer will work closely with Indigenous clients to help them access legal supports and other social services that address the challenges they face in the child protection and criminal justice systems. You will provide legal representation for criminal and child protection matters, advocate on behalf of clients for diversion from the formal court system, and work with the Resource and Support Worker to provide wrap-around services that meet the needs of your clients.
Key Responsibilities:- Provide legal representation for criminal and child protection matters to clients who would not otherwise have legal representation
- Advocate on behalf of clients for diversion from the formal court system to less intrusive measures
- Work with the Resource and Support Worker to provide wrap-around services that meet the needs of your clients
- Develop and maintain working relationships with Indigenous communities and service providers
- Collaborate with Indigenous, local, provincial, and federal government agencies and service providers to ensure clients have access to culturally safe and Indigenized programs and services
- Membership in a Canadian Law Society, preferably British Columbia
- 5+ years' litigation experience in criminal defence, with exposure to MCFD (child welfare) matters an asset
- Knowledge of local and urban Indigenous cultures
- Ability to provide a culturally safe environment for clients
- Knowledge of the structure and procedures of Canada's Criminal Justice System and British Columbia's child protection system
We offer a competitive salary range of $90,000 - $150,000, commensurate with education and experience. We also offer an extended benefits package, including health and dental, personal days, paid vacation, and RRSP/TFSA savings plans. The position is full-time, with a minimum of 75% in-office work arrangement available.
