Job Summary:

The Senior Effects Technical Director at Industrial Light & Magic is responsible for generating high-quality FX animation, procedural simulation, and dynamic simulation for feature film visual effects. This role requires strong technical skills, excellent aesthetic judgment, and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and create complex FX animation, procedural simulation, and dynamic simulation systems
  • Light and render complex shots, communicating status to supervisors and production
  • Provide accurate time estimates for shot work and hand off elements to other departments
  • Present shot work in dailies and attend department meetings
  • Mentor junior effects artists and manage data for shots, including cleanup
  • Participate in special projects as needed

Requirements:

  • At least 5 years of relevant professional VFX experience and a college-level diploma in computer graphics, fine arts, design, or photography, or related field; OR at least 7 years of relevant professional VFX experience in lieu of education
  • Demonstrates an excellent aesthetic eye and strong teamwork and interdisciplinary thinking
  • Production pipeline experience and strong communication and follow-through skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and deadlines, with experience in Maya, 3DS Max, Houdini, or similar software
  • Basic understanding of physics simulation and Linux scripting ability in Python
  • Advanced simulation experience with Houdini, Maya, 3DS Max, or other software, and the ability to write expressions
