Job Title

A First Nations Advisor will be responsible for providing culturally safe and appropriate advice to our people on First Nations matters.

This role will empower the advisor to establish and implement a culturally safe and appropriate First Nations plan for Joint Capabilities Group to deliver upon its cultural intent through meaningful and timely actions whilst maintaining strategic alignment to Defence strategy.

The successful candidate will establish positive and influential connections, understand and navigate challenges as they arise and harness opportunities to support decision making.

Key Responsibilities
  • Establishing and building collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders to inform and support the delivery of Defence's First Nations Approach
  • Providing a First Nations perspective and insights into the development and implementation of Joint Capabilities Group projects and plans
  • Providing timely and culturally appropriate advice to Joint Capabilities Group personnel as required
  • Advising the Joint Capabilities Group Culture, Diversity and Inclusion Working Group on culturally safe and appropriate initiatives to ensure the delivery of meaningful outcomes
  • Building the capacity of Joint Capabilities Group to implement culturally sensitive, safe and responsive practice through advice and education provision as/when required
  • End to end design and delivery of projects aligned to Defence's and the Government's commitment to Reconciliation
Requirements
  • Knowledge of issues impacting First Nations Peoples and communities
  • Knowledge and/or lived experience around the social determinates of health impacting on First Nations peoples
  • Ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with First Nations peoples
  • Strong communication skills both spoken and written, with the ability to adapt communication styles depending on the setting
  • Previous experience in a similar role
  • Existing relationships with First Nations peak bodies, advocacy organisations, service providers or other organisations
