Head of Indigenous Affairs Position

This critical leadership role seeks a visionary and culturally grounded professional to drive culturally inclusive strategies, develop innovative solutions, and foster an open, diverse, and inclusive environment.

Main Responsibilities:

  • In partnership with the Tumuaki Maori/Head of Maori and Equity, provide strategic direction and leadership in developing and executing initiatives that achieve health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, aligning with the key priorities of the Indigenous Strategic Framework (ISF).
  • Support the growth of cultural competency and safety within our organization.
  • Provide expert advice to our leadership on matters related to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, informing policy development and advocacy that reflects Indigenous perspectives and priorities.
  • Oversee the development and delivery of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Committee and Workplan.
  • Lead the development of an Indigenous curriculum that aligns with our goals, integrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives and knowledge to promote cultural safety and competence.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships across the organization to ensure relevant, pragmatic advice and solutions, collaborating with the Leadership Team to drive impactful results for Indigenous peoples.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline (e.g., health services management, public policy) or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health issues, health inequities, colonial trauma, and self-determination.
  • Experience in delivering projects in a health environment, particularly Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander health.
  • Knowledge and experience working with the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations sector.
  • Highly developed analytical, political judgement, and strategic thinking skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to build positive and constructive relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage and develop a team, inspiring direction and purpose with a focus on delivering results.
