As a Regulatory Veterinarian, you play a critical role in ensuring the integrity and welfare of thoroughbred racing in Victoria. Your work is instrumental in maintaining the highest standards of animal care and safety.
The position operates on a 10-day fortnight roster, with a minimum of five raceday shifts and the remainder spent at our head office supporting broader team operations.
Key responsibilities include attending race meetings, examining horses, providing expert advice to Stipendiary Stewards, and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.
A successful candidate will have a strong interest in regulatory, raceday, and equine welfare work, with excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder engagement skills.
Essential requirements include a degree in Veterinary Science from an Australian university or equivalent overseas qualification recognized in Australia, with registration or eligibility for registration as a veterinarian in the State of Victoria.
Key duties involve:
- Providing veterinary services at race meetings, official trials, horse training locations, and the Werribee International Horse Centre, adhering to RV policies and Rules of Racing.
- Examing horses and offering expert advice to Stipendiary Stewards regarding suitability to race, ensuring horses are presented free of prohibited substances.
- Leading and overseeing veterinary staff on raceday, providing technical support and guidance to enhance capability across the team.
- Managing and coordinating the delivery of RV's drug control program at race meetings, ensuring strict compliance with all relevant regulations.
- Delivering advice to Stipendiary Stewards and industry stakeholders on matters related to horse health, welfare, drug control regulations, and application of the Rules of Racing.
- Building strong relationships with key raceday stakeholders, including trainers, owners, stable veterinarians, and other industry participants.
- Participating in projects aimed at improving racehorse safety, welfare, and racing integrity, collaborating with peak research bodies and managing key stakeholder relationships.
- Supporting the General Manager - Veterinary Services in auditing veterinary service delivery and driving continuous improvement across all operations.
- Preparing reports and documentation to support the Veterinary Services Team's operational and strategic initiatives.
